That’s the medical doctors we need. We have also started a project called “The Miracle Project,” and we put this project today to be at the disposal of the U.S. If you know someone – tomorrow when you show this broadcast this show and you have people who have eye problems and they cannot afford an eye surgery, please, go to the Venezuelan Consulate in the U.S. Go to the U.S. Embassy in Washington. Go to CITGO. We can guarantee the transportation of these people to Caracas and Havana free, totally free of charge. These people could undergo eye surgery. This year we have conducted close to 100,000 eye surgeries, cataracts. In children, when you do not operate these cataracts, they can go blind, cornea operations, estavism, myopia and many others. You wear glasses and you are writing pretty well, right? If you remove your glasses, you cannot read. It’s going to be difficult. The same thing. I am 51 years old. So I have problems with my eyes. I need glasses. There are people who cannot read because no one has told them that they should wear glasses. They don't have glasses to read – millions of human beings. So we have this plan with Fidel, and we have agreed to do this in the next 10 years, and we have already started, 2005 to 2015, we are going to operate to conduct eye surgery to a million people. 600,000 people per year. That's a miracle surgery. And that includes the U.S. people, especially the poorest of the poor. Help us to help these people who are suffering from eye diseases.

Chavez went on to discuss the tragedy of people who are UNABLE TO READ because they are not enabled to see, (let alone educated).

There is NO solution to humanity's ultimate brick wall but democratic socialism. Why can not the media perceive that their reporting on NOLA reveals a dark conspiracy? Because it is instance-inhibited and philosophy-challenged. Because it is bound to the particular and not to the aggregate. Because its minions are paid NOT to think in the round. This country is in desperate straits - and we the people, if government has its way, will be the last to know how irrelevant and in-the-way we are.

I have much more to say on this, but will produce THE essay later. The one where other people had rights too, where law was law, and where trangressors of the law would be punished, no matter who they - or their parents - were. The mini-bush must have absorbed some sense of "noblesse immunité" at his father's knee.

As a small boy, W threw a baseball through an ailing, elderly neighbor's window and his father was agog with admiration for his throwing arm. As a small man, he forces us to witness his willingness to submit the powerless to unending abuse, in the name of his own overweening "superiority." Bush as God - not the redeemer, but the destroyer - the destroyer of all "lesser" beings.

George H.W. Bush - he of dark connections and immunities - has contaminated this nation: with perversion, with murder and with evil designs on power for its own sake. His father taught him well by supporting fascist movements in Europe and profiting by them. We are seeing the poisonous spawn of this cynical, godless philosophy now.

This shrunken individual, this "W," is a "personage" without a persona, an empty shell, an automaton when we are desperately in need of a human being. I was early exposed to (and delighted by) the story of Pamanondis and his assiduous, painstakingly literal, obedience to his Mammy's injunctions to "Be keerful."

This is eons ago, people; so I can't recollect all the delicious instances of Pam'nondis's obedience. But two do adhere. P was sent to get butter by his mother and sworn "to be keerful" of that butter. So he carefully wrapped it in leaves, placed it in his hat, put on the hat and walked home on a hot summer day. Guess what happened.

The other episode I recall occurred on a day when P's mother, who had been baking pies all day and was cooling them on the doorstep, was called away and exhorted P, who was still at home, that if he went out to "be keerful how you step in dem pies."
So, of course, Pamanondas stepped very carefully in the center of each one.

Now, I can appreciate the racial denigration in the tale. But the semantic point remains for all that. Perfect twisting of the CONTENT of words to distort their INTENT - in Pamanondis' case from innocent stupidity, in more current discussions from devious, even malevolent violence on logic.

Karl Roverer's claims that he did not "name" Valerie Plame outright may be literally true - I have no idea. Karl Roverer's assertions that Wilson's "story" was in error and he was simply saving reporters from reporting a lie is a logistical extension of a P-interpretation that is in itself an untruth. Karl Roverer's cycling of classified information so that all sources "sourced" each other is a shell game. Karl Roverer has stepped neatly into the middle of every American pie baked hopefully in the last five years; and it wasn't because he made a naive mistake.

Pheonix?

There's too much to write about, let alone even contemplate, and I don't know where to begin: from the moral infamy of U.S. "detention centers" to the rape and rapine of truth and decency within our own supposedly "representative" establishment. This myth needs to be exploded, absolutely and immediately; because felix domesticus is one of the greatest unnatural disasters to have inflicted itself upon the North American ecosystem.

Let us begin by defining prejudices or the absence thereof. I happen to love cats. I have a cat, a supremely intelligent fellow who has decided that he cares for us and our concerns more than he yearns for cat-unaccountability and freedom from restraint.
He is not permitted outdoors, and he knows it. As much as he yearns for green grass and voles, he loves much more the absolute cherishing he receives "within the walls;" and he "turns himself in" immmediately whenever he does, by chance, get out. We adore our cat.

Neighbors' cats have devastated nesting birds on our property year after year, many of the birds representing endangered populations. It is estimated that a single free-range cat (no "fault" of his own) kills 200 songbirds per season. And felix domesticus is not a native predator. It was introduced by European settlers to control rats and mice. It was an African species, like the dog, domesticated for human expediencies, and has been a cause of devastating depredation wherever it has, sentimentally, been allowed to thrive - in feral or untended "domestic" populations.

It is time to control cats. They CANNOT be allowed to roam and kill unimpeded, while their "owners" can't be bothered to keep track of their whereabouts or change their litter-boxes. If people want to retain the priviledge of having "pets," they are going to have to accept responsibility for them. And keep them indoors.

Look Deeper, Mr. Moyers

We came across the following article at Counterpunch and were so impressed by its importance at this critical juncture in the setting of this country's environmental policies that we contacted the author for permission to repost it here.

Bush, Cheney, and apocalyptic crackpots are scary, but . . .

Stan Cox

It's enough to make your hair stand on end and your eyes bug out. Not only is the Earth in peril, but some people who hold sway over the fate of the planet believe that soon the whole place is going to go up in a blaze of brimstone anyway -- and they can't wait to watch it happen!

Bill Moyers, in the March 24 issue of the New York Review of Books, paints a scary picture indeed. With a greeting of "Welcome to the Rapture!", Moyers writes about the vast numbers of Americans who believe that an imminent end of the world is predicted in the Book of Revelation and about their energetic support for the Bush administration. He draws this conclusion:

"A powerful current connects the administration's multinational corporate cronies who regard the environment as ripe for the picking and a hard-core constituency of fundamentalists who regard the environment as fuel for the fire that is coming. Once again, populist religion winds up serving the interests of economic elites."

Moyers is right: It "sends a shiver down the spine." But the Earth was headed down a highway to hell long before Bush was elected or the Armageddon Clock started up. Triumphant capitalism, performing precisely to specifications, is showing itself fully capable of pulling off an ecological apocalypse, with or without the help of superstitious scripture-twisters.

When it comes to shining a light on some of the most alarming outgrowths of capitalism, Moyers is a master. But in going after the Bush administration's scorched-Earth environmental policies, its "multinational corporate cronies", and those hallucinatory crackpots brandishing their biblical licenses to plunder, he missed the root cause of the problem: capitalism's addiction to perpetual growth.

Growth: the sacred bull in the china shop

While there are not enough members of Congress willing to oppose the building of roads in wilderness areas or the gutting of the Clean Air Act, many do take those positions. Such issues are OK to discuss in polite society. On the other hand, when did you last hear a national politician say, "This economy's growing too fast, and if elected, I'll work to cut growth!"?

They never say that, because they would be admitting that capitalism is unsustainable. There is no such thing as capitalism without growth. Capitalists -- a class of folks whose income is "unearned" (a term devised and used, with uncharacteristic clarity, by the IRS) -- have a well-understood role in society: to take a pile of money and turn it into a bigger pile of money.

But a bigger pile of money, once achieved, is not an end but another beginning. To the capitalist, that pile is useless unless it can be turned into an even bigger pile. As a result, more resources are used and wastes expelled this year than last, and even more next year.

Now, if you're a politician or, say, a liberal pundit, you can't very well tell working people, "I'm afraid that our capitalist class is going to be needing an increasingly bigger share of our national income for a while -- well, um, actually forever -- and it's all going to have to come out of your paychecks."

Instead, you talk about economic growth and its seemingly miraculous ability to keep boosting the capitalist's return on investment while not completely wiping out the workers who generated it. No problem: Money's imaginary, so bigger piles of it are always possible, and there is no biggest pile.

But, of course, we do have a problem. We have no infinite piles of the stuff (even the renewable stuff) that's needed to turn money into more money. There's a rule that no species can increase its resource exploitation infinitely, and Homo sapiens has not been granted a waiver . Fossil fuels, soil, salmon, and healthy ecosystems are real, and the rules that apply to money -- which is no more real than 'Monopoly' money -- don't apply on planet Earth.

Where good capitalists go bad

Whatever the issue, nasty villains in plush corner offices make an easy target. But they are no more to blame for the state of the planet than are the prophets of Armageddon. All capitalists, big and small, have individual views but a common role in society.

The chief concern of one Captain of Industry might be global warming; of another, the tax deduction on his corporate jet; of another, the Beast with seven heads and ten horns. It doesn't matter because they are all playing by the same rules. The one who doesn't accumulate capital at the requisite pace might well end up punching a clock for one of the others, or worse.

Those who want to square the circle, to have infinite economic growth on a finite planet, generally invoke greater efficiency. Technology is supposed to let businesses generate more monetary wealth while using and abusing less of the material world.

Now, nobody -- no CEO, no environmentalist, not even the Antichrist -- is going to argue against efficiency. But capitalism has a way of turning good things inside out.

If you're a business owner, and you find you can produce the same number of lawn chairs or helicopters while spending less on energy, materials, labor, or waste disposal, that's efficiency, and that means money in the bank for you. But it's your job as a good capitalist to get that money out of the bank, ASAP, and invest it in the real world, where you can turn more stuff into more money. (No matter if demand is down -- buy advertising!)

In a growth-dependent economic order, efficiency simply provides more opportunities for production and consumption. Relying on efficiency to make growth less destructive is like trying to run up a "Down" escalator that never stops accelerating.

What's really scary

Ecological economics, a heretical branch of the discipline, has demonstrated conclusively that if we're to live within our material means, planet-wide, we must (1) limit our species' rate of reproduction, (2) hold our "throughput" of resources and wastes down to a sustainable level, and (3) set upper and lower limits on monetary wealth and income. These policies make up a package; following only one or two of them won't do the job.

While most ecological economists are not explicitly anti-capitalist -- that is, they do not advocate taking society's most important investment decisions out of the hands of an unelected capitalist class and putting them into democratic institutions -- it is difficult to see how capitalists or capitalism could flourish in the kind of world they envision.

And there are ways of making investment decisions democratic. For example, in his book After Capitalism, David Schweikart outlines a vision of the future that we all would find familiar, with private property, buying, selling, profits, and entrepreneurs - but without capitalists! Letting all of society, not just a tiny sliver, decide how to invest would not by itself stop the cancerous growth that's killing the ecosphere. But it's the necessary step.

In his article, Bill Moyers runs through a checklist of the Republicans' environmental sins, from their attacks on the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts to their enthusiasm for oil-drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. But we can't stop there. As I'm sure he knows, we could win every one of those legislative battles and still see the planet's degradation proceed at an accelerating pace.

I sympathize with Moyers. Motivating people is a tricky business. End-times zealots like Gary Frazier and corporate bugaboos like Dick Cheney are just scary enough to shock thoughtful people into action on a few high-profile issues. But talk about root causes of the ecological crisis, particularly capitalism's dependence on unchecked growth, and most of your audience runs, screaming, for the exits.

I don't pretend to have a solution to that dilemma. But we have to start asking these deeper questions, and soon. The Armageddon Clock may be a fantasy, but real clocks are really ticking.

--

Stan Cox(t.stan@cox.net)is a full-time crop geneticist and part-time writer in Salina, Kansas. We voted for you, to remove one of the greatest threats to democracy this country has ever faced: the Bush cartel. And you continue, on your site, to offer saccharine "children-first" blandishments to the public instead of hard, unrelenting opposition to the totalitarian threat this Bush ambush has become. We are ashamed of you.

If you were a man of principle rather than expediency, you would go after the election fiasco. You would investigate aggressively the 9/11 coverup. You would represent the American people against this rape of their democracy instead of hiding behind little make-nice programs that will inevitably be underfunded anyway. You would ADVOCATE FOR DEMOCRACY rather than die a sweet-natured death.

I'm ashamed of you. It's a good one and an excellent idea!

"We DO know what we are doing. We are stealing their future. Betraying their trust. Despoiling their world. And I ask myself: Why? Is it because we don't care? Because we are greedy? Because we have lost our capacity for outrage, our ability to sustain indignation at injustice? What has happened to our moral imagination?"
~ Bill Moyers [On our grandchildren's future]

July 4, 2005
Dear Bill,
I have a suggestion on how to fill your retirement years. Become President! Become President, give the people a choice and re-create our democray.

A lot of people in this rural, Maine seacoast area believe you are the "Schwartzenegger" that Michael Moore is seeking. In fact, peace communities all over the country are uniting behind you to champion the path of "peace," rather than the path of "security," which leads only to a false-safety maintained by repression and violence. How can we be making America safer by making the world more dangerous?

Who was articulating the voices of the majority of Americans who opposed the war with Iraq shortly before its devastation? Who spoke for the large minority of Americans (40+%) against the war during the time of presidential nominations? Did Kerry, who promised us a better and smarter war, offer a choice to stop killing Iraqis? Did Nader, without bully pulpit, reach the American people with a saner foreign policy? A democracy, without a choice concerning the use of its military, makes a mockery of democracy. We live in a nation where capitalism over-choices us, while democracy gives us no choice at all.

The idea that power requires a sustaining myth in order to perpetuate itself, gives credence to Francis Fukuyama's observation: "The critical weakness that eventually toppled these strong states was in the last analysis a failure of legitimacy -that is, a crisis at the level of ideas." Your mythological understanding gleaned from Joseph Campbell can only advantage you in this realm. You would excel in exposing our current security myths to the delight of Americans who know we are on the wrong path: morally, fiscally, and patriotically, threatening our survival. The myth of bringing peace and harmony to the Middle East by Democratizing Iraq through military means (killing tens of thousands of civilians). The myth that we continue to be the 'Good Guys' while we torture and imprison without legal cause the 'Bad Guys.' The myth we are safer by taking the offensive, taking the battle to them over-there, rather then fight them over-here. Of course, the "them" is the problem.

We beseech you to help us to give Americans a choice and save democracy.

Sincerely,
Your name here!

New Open Thread For All. Because, by giving in to despair, we are guaranteeing our own defeat and the unimpeded progress of the oppression we most abhor and dread.

What every good autocrat knows:

A depressed, demoralized, disenfranchized and cynical populace doesn't have the energy to fight back. A resilient, energized opposition is a would-be tyrant's worst enemy.
The dictatorship-to-be keeps the public uninformed, assuring them that their feeling of repugnance for ruling policy is a minority position. Then they make the acquisition of information more difficult still by closing down outlets of free expression in the name of "security" and "patriotism."

Now, if individual citizens REFUSE to succumb to the easy Blue Funk brought on by their contemplation of creeping totalitarianism, its progress just might be slowed or stalled long enough to make an all-out ambush on its position possible. Why not? An army is made up of singular men and women, a movement is comprised of the collective actions of individuals, a quashing of potential tyrannies can be the combined acts of single persons keeping truth and hope alive.

Fight tyranny, folks. But also fight your own defeatist demons. Passivity is a luxury the world cannot afford.

I'm Dreaming of a Christ-like Christmas

Who was Jesus but an extremely thoughtful, honest, concerned and loving man? He suffered in the face of sanctimonious hypocrisy, spoke out against it, FOR human values, and invited martyrdom at the hands of the powerful to make his even more powerful point: that life is too lovely to be lived in enslavement to vested interests and to the ephemeral passions of pleasure and property. That life of the mind and the "heart" builds a far more enduring and rewarding "capital" of the spirit.

Jesus was a Buddhist before the Buddha. He was a militant revolutionary before Mohammed. And he was a prophet for us all in warning of the dangers of superstition and hide-bound, exclusionary prejudice. He died because of, and to expose, this sin.

Love of human potential, the potential of humanity to become more than it is, better than it is, is the lesson of Christmas - the lesson of a newborn child. May we learn from and live up to it.

Shroud the Halls - (but keep the lamps of peace and justice burning in the streets)

A very great many of us up here in the frozen North are having trouble settling in cozily for our annual December postcard pageant of twinkling lights, eggnog and peaceful (read complacent) faith that the greatest good inevitably descends at the moment of greatest darkness. That the world (in the words of Gordon Bok) is "always turning towards the morning."

This year, for millions of Americans, there are two solstices occurring simultaneously: one physical and therefore transitory because subject to physical law; and the other spiritual, thus more threateningly obdurate and less certain of enlightenment - because human laws are often non-binding in this surreal year 2004. We up here, with our eight-hour days and our sixteen-hour nights, are hit with a particularly gloomy double-whammy.

Who can decorate, warbling cheerily to himself of "Peace on Earth, Good Will to Men" while soldiers going to Iraq are telling us that, if they had their way, they would "kill them all?" Who can "shop," when our "President" tells us to buy American while selling (mortgaging) OUR country overseas? Who can nestle snug in his bed, dreaming of sugarplums, while the greatest crime against democracy and human equality since slavery and indentured servitude is being perpetrated "on the roof" (with a little collusion in the basement) by our own leaders?

Happy (PC) Holidays, everyone.

P.S. One thing about cultivating fury: it's hot, despite the season, so hold on to it. Remember when Bush said his tiny tax cuts for the poor would help them buy firewood so they could stay warm in spite of his "energy policy" (forget the urban poor, who don't have wood stoves, let alone firewood suppliers)? Fury too keeps you warm. And it just might help keep your lamps lit with ohms of stubborn resistance.

The Comfort Zone: It's "Just" a Theory

Q: What's scarier than a conspiracy theory?
A. No conspiracy theory. Because it means the end of democracy as we thought we knew it.

The thing about theories is that they are generally based upon evidence. As the evidence mounts, the theory becomes more and more plausible/credible/irrefutable. As the evidence comes to be seen as incontrovertible, the closer the theory gets to becoming accepted fact.
Look at the "theory" of evolution or the "theory" of gravity. Both hypotheses have proven out consistently over the years and both have been accepted, with refinements, as proven fact by the "enlightened"...that is to say, the curious, open-minded, educated and thoughtful. And yet...
NOW we have a "theory" of systematic election fraud and disenfranchisement, testified to by tens of thousands of individuals, investigated by some of the bravest people in this country and confirmed by the OVERT illegal actions of election officials. But the media remains mute about it all. It allows the aftermath of a California murder trial to preempt all coverage of an immensely important news day: a day when thousands of protesters demonstrated for truth in elections at their state capitals; when hearings and testimony in Ohio cracked the thin GOP veneer of plausibility; and when every honest democrat (lower case) hoped and prayed for openness and "transparency."
This media blackout is terrifying. It evokes recollections of the Soviet Union under Stalin. It insists that we speculate as to the pressure being brought to bear behind the scenes of the anchor desks...and by whom it is being exerted.
Conspiracy theory, anyone?
